DOES EXERCISE PREVENT ALZHEIMER’S? A 28 year follow-up study suggests that physical activity did NOT have a protective effect for cognitive decline or risk of dementia. These results suggest that the often observed decrease in physical activity before onset of dementia could be part of the cascade of changes occurring in the very early (preclinical) phase of Alzheimer’s disease. This study published in June 2017 has, of course, been challenged. ‘Your Brain in Sickness and in Health’ discusses this issue briefly (pages 64, 83, 351) in connection with the concept of ‘abulia’ or apathy.
